Dwijen Joshi
Oil / Acrylic on Paper 139 X 145 Inches Mythological
The painting is clearly a representation of Lord SHIVA – the Hindu God who is considered as the most important member of the holy trinity. Instead of a canvas, the painting is made on many pieces of newspapers with different languages, which freezes the time for a moment in that frame and urges the viewer to pause and observe both the painting and the newspaper at the same time. The newspapers with different language of same region are the reflection of diversity, the good, the bad and the evil; imagine the bundle of true or false information that’s there on a single page of a newspaper and that’s woven in the fabric of political, cultural and social phycology. Here is an opportunity to take a pause and observe the composition of the portrait and the collage of newspapers in harmony and have a little conversation with your subconscious. With the combination of acrylic colors and dry pastels, Shiva, also known as “the destroyer”, is painted with utmost passion and adoration towards the mythological figure. The painting is named as “DHYAAN” as it represents Lord Shiva in his meditative form and for the viewers to focus on the issues that we are surrounded with. The center of the painting has Shiva’s intense face carved out. The deep meditator has got ashes smeared all over his face, messy grey hair and beard on his visible cheekbones. His eyes are closed for he is absorbed in his meditationand his third eye is slightly open, which is an indication of him being on the brink of his wrath. He holds the magnificent crescent moon and the flow of the holy river Ganga on his grey-black hair. Both of them are pivotal elements of Shiva’s identity. The whole manifestation is indicating towards Shiva’s emerging ferocious form which will destroy this world down into nothingness if it didn’t improve for better!
