chaos and order

Getting inspired by this movement of waves I created a three-dimensional work using the technique of origami. The traditional practice of origami is a combination of art and science, which can be seen as a meditative practice to clear out the mind. Through this technique of folding, I could go deeper into the structural formation of waves. The element of repetition in my work arose again, in the form of folding. I tried abstracting the structure of wave formation, through a process of repeated folding, creating a visual movement. The method of repeatedly folding is a factual contemplation of being and feeling the time pass by. It is a form of creation where the breathing is working with every fold made. It informs the person doing the folding of each breath that passes by and makes the person more aware of what is happening, not in the immediate surroundings but with the mind and body of the person himself or herself. The process of making included shredding of paper into strips and folding them into small triangular patterns. The use of triangular structures gave me the freedom of working with depth, negative and positive spacing. By putting together folded strips of triangles, I arranged them in the form of a grid, where the spacing between the strips became the connection point for the second strip. As triangles are considered the most stable shape, folding of strips into triangles helped in providing rigidity and flexibility to the structure. The continuous placement of triangular structures one next to another initiated a sense of movement. I used paper from different magazines making it diversely colorful and difficult to look at. The repeated folding of a structured shape and putting it together provided with a clean, symmetric structure. Although, the work is organized in a structural format the unpredictable color scheme of the piece makes the whole experience of looking at it, chaotic.
