Guiding spirit
On an overcast day, along the coastal villages of Ramanathapuram, the face of Om Sakthi, the guardian deity of many communities here, caught my attention. Her striking face seemed to reflect the will and calm determination of the people who work the boats relentlessly, no matter the weather.
She is more than the face that leads the boat. Together with the symbolic cross, the picture of god Murugan inscribed in the deity’s eyes, the imagery on the boat depicted the hold of faith on the lives of people who constantly deal with the vagaries of nature. Faith is the guiding spirit they rely on, to navigate not just their boats but also their lives.
This image is a part of a series shot in rain along the coast, exploring the lifestyle of the fishing community. What is rain for those whose lives are intertwined with water?
