The Clown - A Lover With a Weapon

Kolkata based painter and printmaker Satyajit Roy is best known for his paintings and drawings that resemble decontextualization of objects. Forging an unprecedented and unlikely link between the European Surrealism and American Pop Art movement, Satyajit paints sweetly humorous and softly-witty vignettes. Different motifs allow him to explore the relationship between words, images and the process of producing meaning – themes he embraces in his drawings and paintings. In his latest series of paintings, he introduced ‘The Clown’ the protagonist character who fantasizing different states of life. Through the use of bright colors, cartoonish figures and patterned background, Satyajit tempered his imageries with a visual language similar to Pop Culture. His imageries are mined from variety of sources, including Indian temple Sculpture, Wall Painting, Street Art and Comic Strips. ​

​Satyajit completed both his Bachelor and Masters in Print Making from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, in 2000 ​and 2002 respectively.
