Kinnari Jogi

It is a contemporary tribute to the rich folk traditions of Karnataka. Titled Kinnari Jogi, the work captures the spiritual and musical essence of the wandering who play the traditional stringed instrument Kinnari. My work attempts to capture the soul of the Jogi – whose life is a symphony of devotion and heritage. In Kinnari Jogi, I move beyond mere portraiture to explore the rhythmic relationship between the performer, their instrument and the cultural paradise they inhabit.
Kinnari’s three gourds serve as the visual heartbeat of the painting. By using bold, gestural palette knife strokes, I wanted to imbue the canvas with the same raw, unprocessed energy found in folk music.
When Kinnari herself touches the strings of the bow, it creates a bridge between the past and the present. Using acrylic on canvas, I layered designs to reflect the layers of history these musicians carry – scraped, built, and weathered, but remarkably resilient.
