The Red Tree

Prittam Priyalochan
Ink, gold foil and acrylic on canvas 24 X 24 Inches Contemporary
This is an image of a Red Tree that I came across taken in the 798 Art District in Beijing whose industrial warehouses were previously occupied by the Chinese and Russians until the 1980s The 1990s witnessed the resurrection of this area into an eclectic Art District. What struck me most about the picture was the significance of the auspicious red color in Indian and Chinese cultures - Red signifies luck, success and good fortune in both cultures. It reminded me of the beliefs of Indians who also worship trees in India. In ancient Chinese legend, the Red Thread of Fate is an invisible thread said to tie together all those whose lives will intertwine. It is governed by the Chinese God of marriage, Yue Lao, as it is often most associated with the link between two people who are destined to be married.
