Reverse Evolution

Shivanand Shagoti
Acrylic on Canvas 72 X 36 Inches Figurative

They say, human beings are the most superior species among all living species. This is mainly due to the fact that humans have intelligence and reasoning powers. But as humans evolve and attain newer skills and resources at their disposal, humans often tend to forget their basic instinct and act worse than their primates. The same point has been highlighted in this artwork in an insightful manner. The painting is influenced by the characters in the painting itself and draws its inspiration from the real world and the happenings around it.

The Earth is a home for various living beings in which humans are one among them. Every organism has its own traits and behaviors for a long time and will continue to be so in the future too. But when it comes to humans, the case is very different. Even though every human being has a disguise of dignified personality and social appearance, deep inside, every human has a monkey inside his head which is craft fully depicted in this artwork.

Through a press meet as a backdrop, I wanted to rediscover all those conveniently forgotten human experiences. In this press meet, the audience can observe all types of expressions like carelessness, liveliness, laziness, cunningness, and authority of false promises. All characters picturized here are monkeys which are symbolic representations of the thought process of every individual present in that press meet. Even though some may be indifferent, some may be laughing among themselves, some may even express their anger openly. There is no seriousness among the subjects to be precise as all characters in this painting jumping around to achieve their own personal agenda.

Due to the constant evolution and progression of humans towards social etiquettes, there has been a dramatic shift from our primate to the current position. But due to human’s greed, endless crave for social recognition, money, etc., the evolution process will go on in the reverse direction. Many human emotions like fear, anger, sadness, disgust, surprise, trust, and so on are reproduced here in an elegant way. In other words, the artwork captures all types of moods like a child's silliness, youth's fearlessness, adult’s expressiveness, and elders’ experience. With such a jovial subject in this artwork, wanted to deliver various common traits of human beings without being too much of preachy work.
